Areas designated as mixed residential and commercial and/or  along a main street area in the City of Ottawa Zoning Bylaw are generally able to accommodate larger apartment buildings with a commercial use i.e. retail and office. You could rent or be one of the owners of a unit in the building. The building ownership model would be an equity cooperative or condominium.
